The designs are free. The builders shouldn't be.
AOSSI will publish its space hardware designs for anyone to use. The people who build them will be paid only by a share of net revenue, if there is any.

Space hardware is expensive for reasons that aren't physics.
Designs are proprietary, so every program re-engineers parts someone already solved. Contractors are often paid for effort, not results. Skilled machinists, mechanics and independent engineers have no way in. Open-source hardware projects rarely have a business model, so the best builders can't afford to work on them.
- 01
Open by default
Designs, CAD, software, data and documentation will be published openly. Anyone can use them, including commercially.
- 02
Paid only from revenue
Builders will be independent contractors, paid only by a share of net revenue, if there is any. If nothing earns, nothing is owed.
- 03
No equity sold
No investors to answer to. AOSSI will compete on execution, quality and its name. Not on patents.
Every AOSSI design is judged in this order.
- 01Durable
- 02Repairable
- 03Modular
- 04Backwards compatible
- 05Scalable
- 06Non-Exotic
THE LINUX OF SPACE: MODULAR STANDARDS. NEW CAPABILITIES. OLD PARTS STILL FIT.
Proposed first experiment: test water as shielding.
An open-source CubeSat that would measure radiation dose behind a water jacket and behind aluminum, side by side. AOSSI habitat design assumes water tanks double as shielding. This experiment would test that assumption. Status: proposed, not started.
No degree? Fine.
acme.academy is planned to issue certificates of understanding that qualify you to work on AOSSI projects.
